Jane Yolen Highly Critical of J.K. Rowling
From: www.writerswrite.com

" Bestselling children's author Jane Yolen has a few uncomplimentary words about J.K. Rowling in a new interview with Newsweek.

I read the first three [Harry Potter books]. The fourth one stopped me in my tracks, partially because even though the story moves along, I just don't feel like they're well written. Besides, I wrote a book called Wizard's Hall [in 1991, eight years before the first "Harry Potter" book]. And there's an awful lot of Wizard's Hall in it [the Harry Potter books]. I always tell people that if Ms. Rowling would like to cut me a very large check, I would cash it. [Wizard's Hall] has got a boy named Henry [who] goes to wizard school, doesn't think he has talent. He has a good friend with red hair. There's a wicked wizard who's trying to destroy the school, and the pictures on the wall move and speak and change. I have kids who write to me all the time and say, "I thought you had stolen Harry Potter, but my teacher pointed out that you published it eight years before Harry Potter."
Ms. Yolen makes a pretty serious allegation about Rowling's work, especially with that comment about being willing to cash a royalty check if such were forthcoming, but there's no word that she is contemplating any legal action. You can read our interview with Jane Yolen here. You can read our feature on J.K. Rowling here. "

Larry McMurtry Keeps the Bookstore Alive
From: www.writerswrite.com

" Larry McMurtry, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Lonesome Dove and Terms of Endearment said earlier this year that he was going to close his independent book store Booked Up Inc. because of declining sales. But now he says he's reconsidering:
McMurtry said this week that the shop's outlook has improved due to staff cuts and an upturn in business. The North Texas shop contains about 400,000 books, including hard-to-find, out-of-print and used editions.

"I think it will be able to stay solvent and stay open," McMurtry said. "I didn't want to close it." McMurtry revitalized his one-stoplight hometown when he opened the shop in the mid-1980s. The store grew as McMurtry closed his bookstores in other states and moved the books to the North Texas location. Many residents still resent McMurtry's portrayal of Archer City in The Last Picture Show and other novels.
We're glad the bookstore is staying open. We do love a good browsing session in a great bookstore. "

Kerouac's On The Road Finally Coming to the Big Screen?
From: www.writerswrite.com

" Empire Online reports that Francis Ford Coppola, who purchased the film rights to Jack Kerouac's On The Road novel nearly forty years ago is finally closer to adapting the popular book into a movie. Coppola has decided to produce with Walter Salles directing and Jose Rivera adapting the book into a screenplay. Salles and Rivera also worked together on the Motorcycle Diaries film as director and writer. Motorcycle Diaries was based on the book with the same title by author Ernesto Che Guevara. Empire Online points out the similarities between the two stories.
The links between the Che Guevara epic and Kerouac's novel are clear -- both road movies, focused on two young men who learn about life and living on the way. Both are hugely influential, both boast a cult following and both were written by men who symbolised a generation - Guevara's revolutionaries and Kerouac's 'beat' poets.
Empire Online says the film is now currently in development and won't be in theatres until late next year at the earlies -- but at least the project is finally going forward. "

No Horror For Owen King
From: www.writerswrite.com

" The Associated Press reports that Stephen King's younger son is now an author himself. Owen King has just published a novella novella entitled We?re All In This Together, which is described as "an imaginative and absurdly humorous tale of political partisanship run amok, laced with quirky characters whose bizarre behavior offers an object lesson in the perils of zealotry." What, no ghosts, demons or possessions? Apparently not.
To Owen King, 28, this reflects a desire to cut his own path and see his work accepted or rejected on its merits. But an even stronger motive, he said, is to dispel any assumption that he is writing in the same genre as his father.

"I don?t think it?s fair for Stephen King fans to be deceived, and I know I?m a Stephen King fan," he said in an interview outside the Bangor Public Library. "The last thing I want to do is to present something as ?Stephen King, Part II,? and have it be something that?s a big disappointment."

He considered using a pen name, but was put off by the idea of going by an alias when meeting people or having a go-between handle details of his professional life. The prospect seemed too complex and too weird. ....King acknowledged that his book is grabbing more attention than would a first-time effort by a writer without comparable lineage, but he seems to have made a conscious effort not to capitalize on his father?s fame.

"I think the model that I look at is someone like Jakob Dylan, whose dad is obviously every bit if not more famous than mine," King said. "He?s a guy who sought to build a career on his own, doing something that?s a little bit different than what his father does."
"

Hunter S. Thompson Family
From: www.writerswrite.com

" Hunter S. Thompson's family finally speaks out to the Rocky Mountain News about Thomson's suicide and his planned funeral, in which his ashes will be shot out of a cannon in a private memorial service orchestrated by Johnny Depp and a Hollywood special effects team. Juan Thompson, son of Hunter S. Thompson, talked about the unusual funeral and his father's death.
"This is an unusual way to have your ashes spread, and it's a large gathering because (my father) knew a lot of people," his only son said, referring to the use of a 153-foot "cannon" to scatter the writer's ashes and the some 300 invited guests. "But what it comes down to is this is saying goodbye to my dad's ashes."

"This is the last time that all of his friends are going to be getting together to say goodbye to him - and that does not mean it's all going to be weeping and gnashing of teeth, but it's going to be sad because from here on out, we're going to have to come to terms in our own way with the fact that he's gone."

"He is not Duke in Doonesbury. He's not a cartoon character. He's not a drug-addled guy wandering around Las Vegas," Juan Thompson said. "Primarily, he's a serious guy, a writer, and someone concerned about the Constitution."
The funeral is scheduled to go forward on August 20, 2005. Juan Thompson said family and friends will then work on the Hunter S. Thompson Foundation which will assist writers. "
